More women today are building careers, finishing studies or waiting for the right partner before starting a family. Egg freezing lets you preserve your fertility at today’s age and use those eggs later. The single most important factor is when you freeze. This guide explains the best age, how the process works, how many eggs you need and what it costs. You can also read about our egg, sperm and embryo freezing service at Lifeline IVF, Ahmedabad.
What Is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing (oocyte cryopreservation) collects mature eggs from your ovaries, then freezes them with vitrification — an ultra-fast freezing method that prevents damaging ice crystals. The eggs can be stored for years. When you are ready, they are thawed, fertilised with sperm in the lab (usually by ICSI), and the resulting embryo is placed in your uterus.
What Is the Best Age to Freeze Eggs?
Most fertility specialists agree that before 35 is ideal, and freezing in your late 20s to early 30s gives the best results. Here is why: both the number and the quality of eggs fall with age, and an egg frozen at 30 keeps the quality of a 30-year-old egg even if you use it at 40.
- 25–32 years: best egg quality and number; fewer eggs needed
- 33–35 years: still very good; a strong time to act if you are unsure about pregnancy plans
- 36–38 years: worthwhile, but you may need more eggs and possibly two cycles
- Above 38: possible, but success per egg is lower; discuss embryo freezing or other options
An AMH blood test and an ultrasound follicle count before you start show how your ovaries are likely to respond. Read more in low AMH: can you still get pregnant?
How Many Eggs Should You Freeze?
No number guarantees a baby, and recommendations vary between doctors. As a general guide, many clinics suggest aiming for:
| Age at freezing | Mature eggs often suggested |
| Under 35 | About 10–15 |
| 35–37 | About 15–20 |
| 38–40 | About 20–30 (often two or more cycles) |
| Over 40 | Often more than one cycle can reasonably provide |
Your doctor will estimate a target for you based on your age and ovarian reserve.
Who Should Consider Egg Freezing?
- Women who want children later for personal, career or study reasons
- Women with low AMH or a family history of early menopause
- Women about to start chemotherapy or radiation (see fertility preservation surgery)
- Women with endometriosis who may need ovarian surgery
- Couples in IVF who prefer to freeze eggs rather than embryos
The Egg Freezing Process Step by Step
- Consultation and tests — history, AMH, ultrasound, blood tests and infection screening.
- Ovarian stimulation — daily hormone injections for about 9–12 days so several eggs mature together.
- Monitoring — ultrasound scans and blood tests every 2–3 days to adjust doses.
- Trigger injection — the final injection to mature the eggs, about 34–36 hours before collection.
- Egg collection — a 15–30-minute procedure under short anaesthesia; you go home the same day. Read about what to expect on egg retrieval day.
- Vitrification and storage — mature eggs are frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen.
The whole cycle takes about two weeks from the start of injections. Most women return to work the day after collection.
What Are the Success Rates?
Success depends mostly on your age at freezing and the number of eggs stored. With modern vitrification, around 85–90% of eggs typically survive thawing in experienced labs, and each surviving egg has a small but real chance of becoming a baby. That is why the number of eggs matters. Freezing earlier and storing more eggs both increase your chances.
How Much Does Egg Freezing Cost in India?
Costs vary by clinic and by how many medicines you need. Across Indian cities, one egg-freezing cycle commonly costs about ₹1–3 lakh including medicines, with yearly storage charges of roughly ₹25,000–50,000 after the first year. At Lifeline you receive a written estimate after your first scan and tests, before you start.
| Cost item | What affects it |
| Stimulation medicines | Your age, AMH and response |
| Monitoring and procedure | Number of scans; anaesthesia |
| Vitrification | Number of eggs frozen |
| Storage | Number of years stored |
| Future use | Thawing, ICSI and embryo transfer when you are ready |
Egg Freezing or Embryo Freezing?
If you have a partner and are already sure you want children together, freezing embryos (eggs fertilised with sperm) is another option. Embryos survive thawing slightly better, and you know in advance how many good-quality embryos you have. Freezing eggs gives you more flexibility: you do not need sperm at the time of freezing, and you decide later how to use them. Some couples freeze both. Your doctor will help you choose based on your age, relationship status and plans.
| Egg freezing | Embryo freezing | |
| Needs sperm at the time? | No | Yes (partner or donor) |
| Flexibility later | High | Lower – embryos belong to both partners |
| Information about quality | Limited until thawed and fertilised | Embryo quality known before freezing |
| Storage limit in India | Up to 10 years | Up to 10 years |
How to Prepare for Your Egg Freezing Cycle
- Do your AMH, ultrasound and blood tests in advance so the cycle can start on time
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol for at least three months before
- Keep active, sleep well and eat a balanced, protein-rich diet
- Plan the two weeks of injections around work and travel; most visits are short morning scans
- Arrange for someone to take you home on collection day
Egg Freezing and the Law in India
The Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 governs egg freezing. ART services are available to women aged 21 to 50, and gametes and embryos may be stored for up to 10 years. Your clinic must be registered under the Act and must take your written consent at each step.
Is Egg Freezing Safe?
Egg freezing is a well-established procedure. Possible side-effects include bloating and discomfort during stimulation, and rarely ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which careful dosing and monitoring help prevent. Collection carries a small risk of bleeding or infection.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best age to freeze eggs?
Before 35 is ideal, and the late 20s to early 30s give the best results because egg quality and numbers are highest.
Is 35 too late to freeze eggs?
No. Many women freeze eggs at 35–38. You may need more eggs, sometimes over two cycles, so plan sooner rather than later.
How long can frozen eggs be stored in India?
Under the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021, gametes and embryos can be stored for up to 10 years.
Does egg freezing reduce my natural fertility?
No. The eggs collected are ones your body would have lost that month anyway. It does not bring menopause earlier.
Is egg freezing painful?
Injections cause mild discomfort. Egg collection is done under short anaesthesia, and most women feel mild cramps afterwards.
Can unmarried women freeze their eggs in India?
The ART Act provides ART services to women above 21. Discuss your situation at consultation so we can explain the current rules and consent forms.
