Hearing that your AMH is “low” can feel like being told your chances are over. It is not. A low AMH level means your ovaries have fewer eggs left than average for your age — it does not mean you cannot conceive, and it says nothing about the quality of each egg. At Lifeline IVF Centre in Ahmedabad, many women with low AMH have conceived, some naturally and some with treatment. This guide explains what your number really means and the options that work.
What Is AMH?
Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is made by the small follicles in your ovaries that hold immature eggs. The more follicles you have, the higher your AMH. That is why doctors use it as a marker of ovarian reserve — the number of eggs left.
Three things to know about the test:
- It can be done on any day of your cycle; you do not need to wait for day 2 or 3.
- It measures egg quantity, not quality. Egg quality depends mainly on your age.
- Birth-control pills can lower AMH for a while, so tell your doctor if you take them.
What Is a Low AMH Level?
Labs report AMH in ng/mL or pmol/L, and their reference ranges differ, so always read your result against your lab’s range and your age. As a rough guide:
| AMH (ng/mL) | What it usually suggests |
| Above 4.0 | High reserve; sometimes seen with PCOS |
| 1.5 – 4.0 | Normal reserve for most women under 35 |
| 1.0 – 1.5 | Low-normal; reserve is starting to fall |
| 0.5 – 1.0 | Low ovarian reserve |
| Below 0.5 | Very low ovarian reserve |
AMH falls naturally with age, so a level of 1.0 ng/mL means something different at 28 than at 40. Your doctor will look at AMH together with your age and an antral follicle count (AFC) — a simple ultrasound that counts the small follicles in each ovary.
Can You Get Pregnant Naturally with Low AMH?
Often, yes. A large study of women aged 30–44 trying to conceive naturally found that those with low AMH became pregnant at about the same rate as women with normal AMH (BC Medical Journal summary of Steiner et al., JAMA 2017). You only need one healthy egg each month, and low AMH does not stop you ovulating.
What low AMH does tell you is that your fertility window may be shorter. If you are not yet trying, it is a reason to plan earlier rather than later. If you have been trying for some time, it is a reason not to wait too long before seeing a specialist.
What Causes Low AMH?
- Age — the most common reason; egg numbers fall steadily after the early 30s
- Genetics and family history of early menopause
- Ovarian surgery, for example removal of endometriosis cysts (endometriomas)
- Endometriosis, especially endometriosis cysts on the ovary
- Chemotherapy or pelvic radiation
- Smoking, which speeds up egg loss
- Some autoimmune and genetic conditions (for example, Fragile X pre-mutation)
Can You Increase Your AMH?
There is no medicine that reliably raises AMH or creates new eggs. Be wary of anyone who promises to “increase AMH”. What you can do is support the quality of the eggs you have:
- Stop smoking and limit alcohol
- Keep a healthy weight and active lifestyle
- Eat a balanced diet with enough protein, fruit, vegetables and healthy fats
- Correct vitamin D deficiency and thyroid problems if present
- Take supplements only on your doctor’s advice

Treatment Options for Low AMH
1. Do not delay
Time matters more than any single treatment. If you are under 35 and have tried for 12 months, or 35 or older and have tried for 6 months, book a fertility evaluation. With low AMH, many doctors advise an earlier check.
2. Ovulation induction or IUI
For younger women with open tubes and a healthy semen report, tablets or injections to help ovulation, sometimes with IUI, can be a reasonable first step for a few cycles.
3. IVF with a personalised plan
IVF lets doctors collect the eggs you produce in one cycle and choose the best embryo. With low AMH, the stimulation plan is tailored to your ovaries, and some couples bank embryos over two or more cycles before transfer. Read how the IVF process works step by step.
4. Egg or embryo freezing
If you are not ready for a baby yet, freezing eggs or embryos now preserves today’s egg quality for later. See our egg, sperm and embryo freezing service.
5. Donor eggs
When AMH is very low and IVF with your own eggs has not worked, donor eggs offer a high chance of pregnancy. In India, egg donation is regulated by the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021. Learn about our donor egg and sperm programme.
Low AMH and IVF Success
Low AMH usually means fewer eggs are collected in each IVF cycle, but age remains the strongest predictor of success. A 32-year-old with low AMH often has better chances than a 42-year-old with normal AMH, because her eggs are younger. Your doctor will explain your realistic chances using your age, AMH, follicle count and previous history. Read more about IVF success rates by age.
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
- Your AMH report says “low” and you want a baby in the next few years
- You are 35 or older and have tried for 6 months
- Your periods are becoming shorter or irregular
- You have had ovarian surgery, endometriosis or cancer treatment
- You have a family history of early menopause
Questions to Ask About Your AMH Result
- What is my AMH compared with the normal range for my age at this lab?
- What is my antral follicle count on ultrasound?
- Given my age and tests, should we try naturally, start treatment or consider freezing eggs?
- If we do IVF, how many eggs might you expect, and might we need more than one cycle?
- Are there other tests I need, such as thyroid, prolactin or a semen analysis for my partner?

Frequently Asked Questions
What AMH level is too low to get pregnant?
There is no level at which pregnancy becomes impossible. Women with very low AMH do conceive, naturally or with IVF. A low level mainly means fewer eggs and a shorter window, so earlier action helps.
Can low AMH be increased naturally?
No diet or medicine is proven to raise AMH. Healthy habits can support egg quality, but they will not add eggs.
Does low AMH mean early menopause?
Not always. It suggests fewer eggs remain, which can bring menopause somewhat earlier, but AMH cannot predict the exact age of menopause.
Is IVF possible with AMH below 1?
Yes. IVF is commonly done with AMH below 1 ng/mL. Fewer eggs are usually collected, so the plan is personalised and sometimes more than one cycle is needed.
Does PCOS cause high or low AMH?
PCOS usually causes high AMH, because the ovaries contain many small follicles. Read our PCOS treatment guide.
Should I freeze my eggs if my AMH is low?
If you are not ready for pregnancy soon, discuss egg freezing early. The younger you are when eggs are frozen, the better their quality.
